La Barceloneta buildings, Barcelona PDF Print E-mail

Above Barceloneta beach, the most popular beach in Barcelona promenade, modern buildings are built with variety of integrated greening. On one of the buildings, an extensive green roof with grass and low vegetation was installed. Although anyone hardly walks over the roof, from the seaside road  greenery can be seen while the green roof is used mainly for natural temperature control of the building.

In the Barcelonian summer the temperature sometimes reaches 40°C and these green roofs reduces the so-called 'heat island' effect. This effect occurs when artificial materials are used which radiate a much higher temperature than its surroundings, which of course further  worsens the temperature. Green roof reduces extreme temperatures, especially in summer, which prolongs the lifespan of roof insulation. Moreover, the green roof in winter isolates cold sea breezes and absorbs excess water during storms which reduces the load on the sewage system.

As part of a shopping mall that has lots of open space and big glass windows, there is a plateau with a garden and  a pond.  This is mainly used by the restaurant and provides plenty of shade, but also beautifies concrete, glass and metal. Converting non-functional areas in a functional and aesthetically pleasing with an integrated green go very well together, especially in modern architecture.
